With changing regulations, Whitcomb saw an opportunity. He launched RCI as an engineering firm specializing in telecommunications, one of the first of its kind. Businesses could finally come to someone with a specific need and walk away with a tailor-made solution. That spirit of innovation and independence still runs through RCI today, even in an ironic sense, as RCI still finds ways to make old-school on-site phone systems work for the needs of businesses that still prefer them.
The First Big Step
RCI’s first major client came by way of a referral from the globally known name Hitachi, a major manufacturer that didn’t offer custom engineering. The client needed audio amplifiers for a specific client. Within a week, RCI had executed a complete design, fabrication, and installation of the solution, serving as proof-of-concept that RCI could deliver fast, reliable results, setting the stage for a long, rich history to come.
Adapting to a Changing Industry
Over the decades, RCI has evolved from a telecommunications specialist into one of the most versatile Southwest Virginia IT companies. As client needs expanded, so did our services: overhead paging systems, security cameras, door entry systems, networking, and more.
No matter the domain, RCI has always stuck to what we do best. “If we couldn’t provide a good job and deliver good value, we didn’t want to do it at all,” says Whitcomb.

The client insisted on all executive models. Whitcomb tried to inform them, saying, “You really don’t need them,”. But when they reiterated their choice, he simply said, “Yes, sir.”

So what does hitting the 50-year mark mean to Whitcomb? He joked by bluntly saying, “Retirement,” then quickly pivoting to say that the industry never stops evolving. John Whitcomb stands proud of the journey. “It’s been a really wonderful experience,” he said. “There’s been some stress, but I’ve had major projects that were quite significant.” And he loves the profound impact RCI has been privileged to make on both employees and clients alike.
